Many have questions on how to determine God’s will, direction, or calling on their life. This is difficult because God speaks to all of us a little differently. There are a few basic principles.
- Starts with obeying God’s word. If you’re not willing to do what God has already said, how can he trust you with what he will say. (James 1:22)
- It’s easier to steer a car while it’s moving. Find a ministry and serve. Figure it out along the way. Discovery is not handed to us – it is pursued. (Romans 12:1-2)
- Long-haul prayer. There came a point where I knew I needed to pray about God’s next step for me. I prayed for 18 months before receiving an answer. Many have prayed much longer. God develops us for His direction as we seek it. (Matthew 7:7)
- Expect surprises. I’m not sure who was more surprised about me being called into ministry – me or every other human being. Be prepared for a direction you would never expect. (1 Corinthians 1:27)
- There is no autopilot. Knowing God’s direction is just beginning. If God is calling you to youth ministry you will need to learn about youth ministry. God isn’t going to pour the knowledge into your head. Live into your calling. (2 Timothy 2:15)
- Calling makes life harder, not easier. A clearer path is not an easier path. God’s direction involves sweat, sacrifice, tears and commitment. (1 Corinthians 9:27)
- It’s not about you – it’s about God’s kingdom. God is calling you to do great things for Him … in His name and power … for His glory – not your’s. (Matthew 6:33)
ONE EXTRA: God wants you to know His will more than you do. – Mark Batterson
It is true that we cannot serve God on autopilot. Either we are moving toward Him, or, away. The more skills and abilities we learn the more doors God opens to us.
