A young friend of mine went to a local Comic Con to find a group of Christians loudly protesting the convention. When he asked them why, no one would engage him in conversation. “And the leader was too busy screaming.” He added.
“Why were they doing this?” He asked
My reply: “For one simple reason: they’re idiots.”
I told my friend some things to consider in light of this. As Christians and leaders we can learn from this situation as well:
- Salvation through Jesus cures sin – not stupidity. It’s a hard truth but there it is. I really wish it did. It doesn’t. But …
- Studying the Bible does cure stupidity. (Psalm 119:24, 119:98-100) There is difference between reading and studying the Bible. Had the protesters studied the Bible they would have seen neither Jesus, nor his disciples, screamed at people.
- It is difficult to remove by reason a belief that reason did not place there. There are peaceful ways to protest. But this protest was driven by unreasonable, negative emotion. You cannot reason with unreasonable people.
- Do not judge a belief by the abuse of that belief. Don’t judge Christianity by the actions of those who don’t understand it. If I shoot up an office building in the name of Gandhi it means I don’t understand Gandhi at all.
- The Bible has a lot to say about how to speak to others. We are to speak truthfully (Eph 4:25) with encouragement (Eph 4:29) patience (Eph 4:2) grace (Col 4:6) forethought (Pro 15:28) and calm (Pro 29:11).
Any thoughts?
