4 C’s of Leadership

Leadership looks for certain traits. Many more have been listed but we try to keep things simple by looking for 4 characteristics. We’re providing this for three reasons:

  • Ask before assigning leadership “How far along is that person?”
  • Ask “How can I help potential leaders?”
  • And ask “How am I doing in these areas?”

The 4 C’s are:
Character  – Colossians 1:9-10; 2 Peter 3:18
Not only living well with others but living morally as God defines it. Character shows:
–  Life change: demonstrating intentional spiritual growth.
–  Trustworthiness: saying what you mean and meaning what you say.
Others having these means not having to patrol, check-up on or micromanage their activities.

Chemistry – Romans 12:18; 1 Peter 5:3-5
This is the most important area! They can have all other 3 C’s but if they are driving people nuts they need to go! Chemistry means:
Flexibility: Life throws curve balls. Be ready to change for others without complaining.
Understanding authority: Sometimes we’ll do it your way. Often, we won’t.

Culture – 1 Corinthians 9:20-23
Without love ministry gets very messy.
Know our people: This goes beyond acceptance. Embrace them for who they are and where they are.
Know our DNA: God gives the direction. That’s where we’re headed.

Competence – Colossians 3:23; Proverbs 18:9
Simply being able to do the job. Be:
Teachable: Those who already know-it-all will not get far here. Or anywhere else.
Willing to fail: We try things out and often fall on our face. It’s the only path to success.

Bonus: Why do this? Acts 20:28 is clear. Leaders protect followers – especially from other bad leaders.
